The railway bridge over the Tay is the second such structure to do so, the original collapsing in 1879. In 1854, plans were drawn up to replace the train-ferry over the river. Sir Thomas Bouch designed a cast wrought iron structure with a single track running on top of a lattice style girder, the centre section being the high girders. It was these high girders that collapsed in high winds on the night of December 28th 1879 as a six carriage engine was crossing. Seventy-five people lost their lives as a result. The new bridge was designed by William Henry Barlow and built by William Arrol & Co. It was constructed 59 feet upstream of the original, the stumps of which still remain. Fourteen men lost their lives during construction. The bridge opened on 20th June 1887 and is 2.75 miles long or 10,711 feet, 8396 feet of this being straight. There are 85 piers with brick arches at the Wormit end, the northern end curves east towards Dundee Taybridge Station.
