Today we were heading to the park to attempt another waymark and decided to take the metal detector along.

Observant viewers will notice that quite a number of submissions to this category are done at beaches. This is likely because metal detecting aficionados discover early on that beaches can be lucrative sites to search. While I've had a metal detector of one type or another for nearly 40 years, we've not yet gotten much use out of the newest one, a Tesoro bought about five years ago. Soooo - we thought that this, the first day of fall, would be a good day to check out the local beach.

I would imagine that others check out the beach every fall and/or spring, as our haul today consisted of a bunch of change ($3.20 worth), all of it pretty new and shiny yet. Though we found a few little bits of aluminum and some other scrap, there were, alas, no diamond rings, watches or other jewelry. Did find an old running shoe though (see below) - the detector hit on the metal grommets.

Though we live in a past gold mining area, there are no placer sites of note nearby, just hardrock gold/silver/copper/zinc/lead mines. Not very good metal detecting sites. True wilderness ghost towns, another metal detecting favorite, are few and far between in the immediate vicinity.
