Der Naumburger Dom gehört zu den bedeutendsten Kathedralbauten des europäischen Hochmittelalters. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte haben viele Um- und Neubauten das heutige Erscheinungsbild des Domes geprägt:

Im Frühjahr 1029 wurde mit dem Bau der ersten frühromanischen Naumburger Kathedrale begonnen und diese 1044 geweiht. Die erste Naumburger Kathedrale war kleiner als der heutige Bau. Um das Jahr 1210 wurde mit dem spätromanischen Neubau begonnen, welcher im Juni 1242 geweiht wurde. Ein bis heute bedeutender Bauabschnitt war die Errichtung des frühgotischen Westchores ab 1250. Der Westchor wird als das erste und großartigste Werk der frühen Gotik in Sachsen und Thüringen verstanden.
Ab 1330 fanden eine hochgotische Erweiterung des Ostchores und zwischen dem 14. Und 15. Jahrhundert weitere spätgotische Umbauten insbesondere am Nordwestturm statt. Nach einem vermutlich mutwillig gelegten Brand im Jahr 1532, welcher den Dom schwer beschädigte, dauerte die Restaurierung der Brandschäden bis ins 19. Jahrhundert.

The Naumburger Dom is one of the most important cathedral buildings of the European High Medieval period. Over the centuries, many new construction and reconstruction have shaped the present appearance of the cathedral:

In the spring of 1029 the construction of the first early Romanesque cathedral of Naumburg began and was consecrated in 1044. The first Naumburg Cathedral was smaller than today's building. Around 1210, the late Romanesque building, which was consecrated in June 1242, was begun. An important part of the construction was the erection of the early-gothic west choir from 1250. The West Choir is considered to be the first and grandest work of early Gothic in Saxony and Thuringia.
Starting from 1330, a highly Gothic extension of the Eastern Chora and between the 14th and 15th century further late Gothic reconstructions took place, especially at the northwest tower. After a presumably intentionally placed fire in 1532, the restoration of the fire damage lasted until the 19th century.
