The Glencairn Fault is part of a larger fault system call the Irvin-Paint Creek Fault System. The Irvin-Paint Creek Fault System is part of the Rome Trough. This structure is a fault-bounded graben involving basement rocks thought to be related to failed rifting of the North American plate .
The left hand side of the fault , foot wall, lies within the Borden Formation. The right hand side of the fault , hanging wall, is within the uppermost Borden Formation and the lower portion of the Slade Formation.
It is evident that that the left side (the north side) of the fault has moved up and that the right hand side (the south side) has moved down.
In the base of the limestone on the right-hand side of the fault is an ball of dolostone that seems to have been injected. This body and others in the area have been interpreted to represent seismites that were deformed by ancient earthquake activity. In this case, the earthquake activity occurred about 340 million years ago and was responsible for injecting the unconsolidated carbonate in the ball-like body
