Wallace fountains are designed by Charles-Auguste Lebourg and named after the Englishman Richard Wallace, who financed their construction. These cast iron fountains are found predominately in Paris but there are others scattered around the world. This one was given to the City of Barcelona for the 1888 World Fair.
Wallace Fountains come in several types. The large model that is locate in Barcelona has four caryatids representing kindness, simplicity, charity and sobriety supporting a decorative dome. Each one of the caryatids is slightly different in the way the knees are bent and how the tunic is arranged.
Water pours in a steady stream from the dome of the fountain, which is decorated on top with dolphins, into a basin that is surrounded by a grille.
