The bust of Santiago Ramón y Cajal is located in Parque Alejandro Humboldt next to the monument to Juan Cristóbal Gundlach and the bust of Alexander von Humboldt.

Santiago Ramón y Cajal (May 1, 1852 - October 17, 1934) was a Spanish pathologist, histologist and neuroscientist who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1906 with Camillo Golgi in recognition of their work on the structure of the nervous system.

It is by refining the silver impregnation technique developed by Golgi (and which today bears his name) that he contributed decisively to the neuronal theory in opposition to the reticular theory, supported by Golgi. He pointed out that neurons were cellular entities separated by fine spaces (which Sherrington would call synapses), and not the fibers of an uninterrupted network.

His original pioneering investigations of the microscopic structure of the brain have led to his being designated by many as the father of modern neuroscience. His medical artistry was legendary, and hundreds of his drawings illustrating the delicate arborizations of brain cells are still in use for educational and training purposes.
