In Chapter 12 of Mark Twain's novel "The Prince and the Pauper", the Prince of Wales, Edward, is in rags as he had switched identities with another boy in order to explore the City without any problems. The other boy is in the palace and is believed to be the real Royal. Edward however is threatened by several circumstances including a hostile crowd when he is not believed when insisting that he is the real Prince. Miles Hendon, a former soldier, rescues the boy from the crowd and brings Edward to his lodgings...which are located in an Inn on London Bridge. The bridge is lit up because the King (Henry VIII) has ordered a celebration for the Prince of Wales (who he mistakenly believes is the other boy in the palace.) News comes that the King has died...making the Prince the new King...and Edward begins to act as King with Miles...and Miles, believing the boy is touched, plays his part as a loyal subject. The chapter begins with a detailed description of the bridge with all it's inns, taverns, homes and shops...and also featuring the heads of criminals on spikes.
