I recovered this California Department of Transportation metal rod from 2004 in good condition BUT... I was almost stung by a black widow spider! I've never encountered a black widow under a metal cover benchmark before so didn't think anything of lifting the lid up without wearing gloves, and the metal lid fell out of its hinge and made the spider almost land on my fingers. This discovery made my heart rate triple for about 10 minutes! I even posted a YouTube
video of my encounter with this sinister-looking arachnid.
Needless to say, I was able to put the metal lid back and leave the spider to live another day. She didn't sting me so there was no need to kill her.
The NGS coordinates and datasheet description are adequate for station recovery.
