In George Orwell's Burmese Days, Katha was the real-life town that was depicted as "Kyauktada" in the novel. Orwell lived a short walk away. In the novel, the characters are constantly meeting here for drinks, cards, conversations,
Part of the novel concerns the Englishman John Flory seeking membership in the club for Dr Veraswami who is Indian. This proposal is opposed by most all other club members.
