Ajuy was declared a Natural Monument in 1994 and is included in the Betancuria Rural Park situated in the municipality of Pájara, in the western part of Fuerteventura.
It stands out because of its paleontological and geological significance. The oldest materials of the Canary Islands can be seen here, and they are of enormous scientific importance, such as the existence of marine fossils,consolidated dunes and oceanic sediments observable on the surface.
The rugged landsacpe of great beauty also stands out. It is home to autochthonous flora and fauna and also has reproduction and breeding areas.
The main ethnographic values were the exploitation and shipping of lime to the other islands from the port called Puerto de la Pena, traces of wich have resisted the passage of time. Proof of this is reflected in the limekilns, the Casa de la Aduana or customhouse, the ramp and the tunnel. Syenite rock used for the manufacture of cobblestones, wich can still be seen today in the streets of Vegueta in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, was also shipped to other islands.
