Housing Unit 4 Missouri State Penitentiary housed many infamous people including James Earl Ray, and Sony Liston just to name a couple. The building was constructed with prison labor from stone the prisoners cut just outside the prison wall. The quality of their work was excellent.
When it was first built there was no electricity or indoor plumbing because it wasn't even invented yet. Even up to the 1950's the prisoners made their own mattresses from hay unless they had money or family to buy them one. In the early days as many as 6 men had to share the small cell.
You must take one of the available prison tours to see the sign and building.
Interesting old sign still hangs on the building designating it as a Fallout Shelter. Not my first choice to go for protection!
Capacity of shelter: 400
Radiation monitoring equipment: Not Listed
