Dunnichen Hill is a rolling wooded area of high ground in the Angus countryside, 3 miles east of the town of Forfar and just under 2 miles north-west from the large village of Letham. The hill overlooks, to the south, the supposed site of the ancient battle of Nechtansmere.

The trig pillar is situated on an unnamed top at 210 metres around half a mile south-west of the actual summit of the hill. The best of the views are to the south over the extensive countryside. The views north towards the mountains are restricted by trees and higher ground. The pillar sits amongst green pasture and is still in good condition.

STEEPNESS: From the hamlet of Dunnichen to the south-east, it is a gradual, but not too demanding climb up the minor road that crosses the hill. The route to the pillar from leaving the road is of gentle rises over the field.

TERRAIN: After the road the terrain is completely of short grass which makes for easier going in dry conditions.

ACCESSIBILITY: As stated a narrow public road climbs the hill from Dunnichen with limited parking. The best parking is next to the old Dunnichen Church where it is just over half a mile up to the pillar.

NAVIGATION: After climbing up a twisting section of road for a few hundred yards, an open gate on the left appears and a faint track heads south of west through the field, then heads slightly to the right up to higher ground where the pillar stands on a fairly level summit above a steep drop to the south.

DANGER: None apart from vehicles on the road. There might be livestock in the field on approach to the pillar. Keep to the faint track.
