La Dalle aux ammonites de Digne-les-Bains (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) est un site naturel remarquable constitué d'une strate rocheuse contenant un très grand nombre d'ammonites fossilisées.

FR Présentation
Cette dalle, inclinée à 60°, est composée de calcaire gris. Elle présente environ 1 500 ammonites dont 90 % sont de l'espèce Coroniceras multicostatum datant du Sinémurien (Jurassique inférieur). Ces ammonites peuvent atteindre un diamètre de 70 cm.

Historique de la dalle
Si célèbre soit-elle aujourd'hui, la dalle n'est connue que depuis récemment.

On estime que la dalle fut partiellement mise au jour pour la première fois au début du xxe siècle, lors de travaux de voirie sur l'actuelle D 900A. En 1979, des premiers travaux de terrassement sont effectués pour dégager la « dalle », et mettent au jour quelque 600 ammonites sur 160 m².

En 1992, la dalle fait l'objet d'un moulage pour le compte de la ville de Kamaïshi, au Japon (qui désirait acquérir l'original). Le moulage a été réalisé sous forme de 30 fragments, qui furent expédiés et assemblés au Japon.

Jusqu'en 1994 seulement 200 m² étaient visibles. Après cette date, la Réserve géologique des Alpes de Haute Provence a entrepris de dégager environ 150 m2 supplémentaires pour atteindre une surface totale de 350 m².

This slab, inclined at 60 °, is composed of gray limestone. It has about 1,500 ammonites, 90% of which are of the species Coroniceras multicostatum dating from Sinemurian (Lower Jurassic). These ammonites can reach a diameter of 70 cm.

Slab History
As famous as it is today, the slab is known only recently.

It is estimated that the slab was partially discovered for the first time at the beginning of the twentieth century, during road works on the current D 900A. In 1979, first earthworks were carried out to clear the "slab", and reveal some 600 ammonites on 160 m².

In 1992, the slab was cast on behalf of the city of Kamaïshi, Japan (which wanted to acquire the original). The molding was made as fragments, which were shipped and assembled in Japan.

Until 1994 only 200 m² were visible. After this date, the Alps de Haute Provence Geological Reserve has undertaken to clear an additional 150 m2 to reach a total area of ??350 m².
