Directions:
from Westcliffe go south on CO Highway 69 for 24 miles. Turn right on FSR #559, follw signs to Medano Pass and Great Sand Dunes National Park. Take FSR #559 west for 7.4 miles. Trailhead is located on FSR #559 at the forest information sign.

The trail can be run in both directions. This is a great trail for beginners and veterans. Just about any stock, high clearance 4wd vehicle should be able to make it. The scenery is spectacular. There is a good mix rock, sand and water crossings. On the east side of Medano Pass the trail is mostly dirt, trees and rocks. On the west side of Medano Pass it gradually becomes mor sand with frequent water crossings. Be-Aware the water crossings can be 2-3 feet deep during the spring snow melt. Always use caution when fording water. When the creek flow goes over 50 cfs, the road is closed for safety.

Roadside camping is permitted only at 21 numbered campsites in The Great Sand Dunes National Preserve. These Sites are indicated with a brown post and camping symbol.

Medano Pass is open late spring through fall depending on snow, creek and road conditions.
