In Cambridge, east of the main campus of Harvard University, is the main branch for Cambridge Public Library.
The library is located off Broadway, and next to Cambridge Rindge Latin School. It is also located about a half mile east of the center of Harvard University and northeast of Harvard Square.
The building is a combination of the stone-walled old original building and the glass-walled modern addition. The old building is in the Richardsonian architecture design, built in 1888. Elements include columns, a turret, several dormers, and embedded relief designs. The old entranced is now glassed in and is now a study area.
Inside, the sides are very different from one another. In the old building are wood walls and furniture. Rooms have very detailed murals on the walls. Some murals include the history of printing. One is a seal of the city of Cambridge with other words and symbols around it. The new areas are minimalist in nature.
This building is the main branch of the Cambridge Public Library system.
