A plaque on the bell reads:

When the Spanish army and missionaries came to California in 1979, they made a route. El Camino Real for travel between missions they established, stretching fro, San Diego to Sonoma. In the early 1900s, a group of women's clubs, among others decided to mark the trail and chose its symbol a mission bell mounted on a shepherds crppk.
