In 1984, the Zoological Museum opened its doors as an institution of the University of Hamburg. Since 2014, it has been part of the Center for Natural History (CeNak) together with the Mineralogical and the Geological-Palaeontological Museum.

It stands in the tradition of the Natural History Museum founded by citizens of Hamburg in 1843, which was destroyed in the Second World War.

The Zoological Museum of Hamburg shows a part of its 10 million impressive collections with specimens of exotic and domestic animals. On an area of around 2000 square meters, huge whale skeletons as well as bears and predators, rhino and crocodile, wisent and okapi as well as birds and insects are presented. Also to be seen is a unique narwhal skull from the year 1684 and the famous NDR mascot, Walrus "Antje". The exhibition focuses on the variety of species (biodiversity) as well as the development of life (evolution) for both children and adults. In the newly designed, multimedial entrance area, the focus is on the role of humans as the greatest natural force in the context of population development, species fading and climate change.

Special exhibitions and events complement the permanent exhibition of the Zoological Museum in addition to the varied museum-educational program.

With over 10 million collections, the Zoological Museum of Hamburg is one of the largest and most important research centers for biodiversity and evolution in Germany at the Center for Natural History (CeNak) at the University of Hamburg.
