Aberdeen, on the north-east coast, is the third largest city in Scotland. The bulk of the city is situated between the rivers Don and Dee. The city boundary extends inland for seven miles or so, taking in commuter towns and rural areas. Five miles west-north-west of the city centre is the highest point, Brimmond Hill at 266 metres or 873 feet above sea level.
The hill is of heather and is prominent due to the influx of telecommunications antenna which adorn the summit area. A triangulation pillar and a cairn also share the fairly level summit.
The hill is part of a country park and is a popular walk. There are two access points from minor roads running along the hills flanks, both just under a mile from the top. The route from the north follows a tarmac path, and the route from the west, close to the boundary with Aberdeenshire, follows a rutted path through the heather.
Despite the proximity of the ironwork on the summit, the hill provides a good viewpoint, east to the city and North Sea, and west to the Grampian Mountains.
