This trapper's cabin contains an interpretive display in front that reads:

Trapper's Cabin

A hand hewn log cabin, built by homesteader H.B. McKinley, who also built the Bear Flat Store in the village. The extension of the roof forms a shelter for hanging hides or storing firewood. In cabins like this trapper's stretched and tanned furs, storing them for the rendezvous where they could be sold and bartered for items of need.

This cabin was originally located at Bear Creek Flat on the Emery Ranch about 36 miles East of Highway 97, and about 50 miles North of Klamath Falls, OR.

The cabin is near 14 feet wide by about 13 feet long. It has a 5 foot roof overhang and was originally chinked with clay, but repaired over the years with driven wedge cut slabs.

The cabin has dirt floors and hand split pine shakes. A fir bough bed rests on the floor of the cabin and a small door under the overhang allows for quick access.

The point of interest coordinates are below are taken at the homestead ranch of Hartley B. McKinley at Bear Flat and approximately where this homestead cabin was originally located. Cool!
