EN: The Stadthaus of St. Gallen is located right next to the monastery district in the old town. It was built in 1590 by Hans Schlumpf, who was then one of the richest citizens of the city, as a residential and business house. At this location, there was a chapel before. Maybe originally an enlargement was planned, the peculiarly narrow western wing with a half gable hints that, also the fact that the building was formerly called the "half house". Until 1787 the house was privately owned, then it was acquired by the Commercial Directorate and became the first post office in St. Gallen. Since 1876, it has belonged to the local citizens community, which established its administration there. Today, it still belongs to the citizens community, and although it has no more function in the city administration, the name Stadthaus has remained.
DE: Das Stadthaus von St. Gallen befindet sich gleich neben dem Klosterbezirk in der Altstadt. Es wurde 1590 von Hans Schlumpf als Wohn- und Geschäftshaus erricht, der damals einer der reichsten Bürger der Stadt war. An dieser Stelle stand zuvor eine Kapelle. Möglicherweise war ursprünglich noch eine Vergrösserung geplant, der eigenartig schmale Westflügel mit einem halben Giebel deutet darauf hin und auch die Tatsache, dass das Gebäude früher das "halbe Haus" genannt wurde. Bis 1787 war das Haus in Privatbesitz, dann es vom Kaufmännischen Direktorium erworben und zur ersten Poststelle in St. Gallen. Seit 1876 gehört es der Ortsbürgergemeinde, die darin ihre Verwaltung unterbrachte. Es gehört heute auch noch der Ortsbürgergemeinde, und obwohl diese heute keine Funktionen der Stadtverwaltung mehr ausübt, ist der Name Stadthaus geblieben.
