Roman Draw Well in the Trading House - Kaiseraugst, AG, Switzerland - Draw Wells on Waymarking.com

EN: The Roman trading house was located on the road from Vindonissa to Basilia, outside of the town of Augusta Raurica. Presumably there was a hostel in the upper floors. In the cellar were storerooms and probably a cloth fullery with a large tub and a heated drying room, other parts of the building probably served as an apartment. The house probably dates from the second century and was rebuilt several times until it burned down and collapsed in the late third century. It was excavated and examined from 1983 to 1985. Today, it is protected under a modern shelter. It is always open and can be visited without entrance fee, however, the rooms themselves are not accessible and can only be visited from the terrace.

The well shaft is located in an adjoining room of the commercial part. It is secured with a grid. Lighting in the well can be switched on by visitors, but the lights did not work during my last visit.

DE: Das römische Handels- und Gewerbehaus lag an der Strasse von Vindonissa nach Basilia, ausserhalb der Stadt Augusta Raurica. Vermutlich befand sich im Obergeschoss eine Herberge. Im Keller befanden sich Vorratsräume und wahrscheinlich eine Tuchwalkerei mit einer grossen Wanne und einem beheizbaren Trockenraum, andere Gebäudeteile dienten wohl als Wohnung. Das Haus stammt wohl aus dem zweiten Jahrhundert und wurde mehrmals umgebaut, bis es im späten dritten Jahrhundert niederbrannte und einstürzte. Es wurde 1983 bis 1985 ausgegraben und untersucht. Heute befindet es sich unter einem modernen Schutzdach. Es ist immer geöffnet und kann ohne Eintrittspreis besucht werden, allerdings sind die Räume selbst nicht zugänglich und können nur von der Terasse besichtigt werden.

Der Brunnenschacht befindet sich in einem Nebenraum des Gewerbeteils. Er ist mit einem Gitter gesichert. Eine Beleuchtung im Brunnen kann von Besuchern mit einem Schalter angestellt werden, die Lampen haben bei meinem letzten Besuch allerdings nicht funktioniert.
