"In 1970 the site was named as a division of the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, with a focus on Australian plant research and conservation. The gardens were not opened to the public until 1989. The Australian Garden was planned and developed over several years, finally opening to the general public on 30 May 2006, and attracting 15,000 visitors on the opening day." The Australian Garden:
"The Australian Garden first opened to the public in 2006 with the goal of inspiring our community to use and enjoy our magnificent Australian flora in home gardens. Explore the colours and textures of Australia. Discover the flash of wildflowers in the desert after rain. Follow the flow of water across the land, find magnificent vistas and hidden horticultural gems. Join us in celebrating the beauty of the Australian flora."

Access, for Exploring the Garden:
"If you fancy a lift or would like to find out more about the Australian Garden take a ride on the Garden Explorer. The driver commentary will provide you with a glimpse into the development of this stunning garden and point out seasonal planting highlights. Tickets are on sale at the Visitor Centre Information Desk [coordinates of this Waymark].

"Wheelchairs, mobility scooters, picnic trolleys and umbrellas are some of the items available for loan from the Visitor Centre and Information Desk and may help make your visit more enjoyable. These services can be booked in advance for future visits - (03) 5990 2200."

What is that plant?
"The Australian Garden features more than 170,000 individual plants representing 1,700 different plant varieties - there is bound to be at least one or two you would like to grow at home. If you would like more information about the plants in the Australia Garden and whether they will grow in the conditions you have in your home garden catch up with one of our friendly Garden Ambassadors (wearing red shirts) roaming the garden or stationed at the Garden Shed in the Northern Display Gardens. Garden Ambassadors will be able to help you identify the plants and work out what sort of conditions and care it will need to thrive in your garden."

The Essence of Australia
"There are a number of trails that you can follow through the Australian Garden. Pick up a map from the Visitor Centre Information Desk and follow the 'Eucalypts for your Home Garden Trail'. Look out for plant labels that will help you find plants that will grow in your garden and QR codes that link to more detailed information about Australian plants.

"Gardens on the western side of the Australian Garden such as the Eucalypt Walk and Gondwana Garden have been inspired by the natural world and contain plants new to cultivation in Australia. The eastern side of the Australian Garden contains display gardens and spaces designed to provide inspiration and examples for home gardeners. Plants in these display gardens are readily available in plant nurseries." [From signage on the way to the Visitor Centre coordinates.]
