A work of the Naumburg master from 1239, came in 1683 by Casimir Count Waldbott to Bassenheim. In 1798, the Bürgermeisterei Bassenheim was founded, from which the Verbandsgemeinde Weißenthurm emerged. 1945-1952 was the castle Bassenheim residence of the French governor of Rhineland-Palatinate. On October 8, 1848, the first meeting of Konrad Adenauer and Robert Schuman took place in the castle after the war. The foundation was laid for German-French understanding. Bassenheim built 1980 the first traffic-calmed streets in Rhineland-Palatinate. The Walpotplatz is considered one of the most beautiful marketplaces in Germany with historic half-timbered houses, including the 1720 built town hall. The Baroque Marienkapelle from 1662 on the 373 m high Karmelenberg is a magnet for people from near and far. The goal of many hikers is the tree avenue, which was created in the 17th century and is a natural monument of inestimable value."
