"The greatest impact in this (Shenkman Art Center's) $37-million complex is produced by a 24-by-170-foot curving glass wall designed by Ottawa artist Adrian Göllner. From one side to the other, the wall’s bands of colours suggest a seasonal progression; the spring-like purple of crocus and lilac, the light green of budding trees followed by the deeper greens of summer and then the oranges and reds of fall.
During the day, the glass wall casts colourful light patterns on the floor and walls inside. Göllner says the full effect will be seen “during those magical times at dusk when people are going into the theatre, and the inside and outside lights struggle for dominance; you’ll get a wonderful combination of colours.”
The wall gives the building its identity and animates the lobby; it’s what you encounter when you approach the building, buy tickets or enjoy a drink at intermission.
