Cross-country skiing has been contested at the Winter Olympic Games since the first Winter Games in 1924 in Chamonix, France. The women's events were first contested at the 1952 Winter Olympics.

The municipality of Leutasch is part of the Olympiaregion Seefeld in a high valley near the border with Bavaria. The Olympiaregion Seefeld’s vast cross-country skiing area offers both classic and skating-style tracks that are freshly groomed on a daily basis. In addition to conventional tracks, the region also boasts special tracks, including 44 kilometres of quality-assessed trails for adaptive Nordic skiing, two floodlit tracks for night-time skiing and a dog-friendly trail, for memorable cross-country skiing against one of the Tyrol’s most stunning mountain backdrops.

The monument represents a male cross-country skier in action. The Olympic rings appear on the front and back of the skier's bib. The plaque shows the year 2004.
