[FR]Dès l’antiquité, la fréquentation du site a été très importante ; les récentes découvertes archéologiques (2002-DRASSN-SSFV) attestent un culte majeur des eaux. Au bout d’une profonde gorge verdoyante, au pied d’une formidable falaise sculptée par l’érosion, jaillit la plus belle rivière du département : la Sorgue de Vaucluse, à quelques centaines de mètres du pittoresque village auquel la vallée a donné son nom.
Avec un écoulement total moyen de 630 millions de m3 par an, cette source est la première d’Europe, et une des plus importantes au niveau mondial, par son volume d’eau écoulé. Elle résulte de l’émergence d’un immense réseau souterrain.
Source fraîche et paisible en hiver et en été, bouillonnante et impétueuse au printemps et en automne, la Fontaine, véritable caprice de la nature ne cesse d’étonner.
La fin du XIX° siècle voit se dérouler la première tentative de plongée dans le conduit noyé de la Sorgue, (en forme d’entonnoir vertical de 308 mètres de profondeur) et plus d’un siècle d’audacieuses explorations permettent de mieux comprendre le mystère de son fonctionnement. En toutes saisons, les sources secondaires alimentent la Sorgue et forment un très beau plan d’eau ombragé de platanes séculaires.
L’intense beauté de ce site naturel a su émouvoir le cœur de nombreux écrivains et poètes : Pétrarque, Boccace, Chateaubriand, Frédéric Mistral et René Char.

Since ancient times, the site has been very important; recent archaeological discoveries (2002-DRASSN-SSFV) attest to a major cult of water. At the end of a deep green gorge, at the foot of a magnificent cliff carved by erosion, springs the most beautiful river of the department: the Sorgue of Vaucluse, a few hundred meters from the picturesque village to which the valley gave its name .
With an average total flow of 630 million m3 per year, this source is the first in Europe, and one of the largest in the world, by its volume of water. It results from the emergence of an immense underground network.
A fresh and peaceful spring in winter and summer, bubbling and impetuous in spring and autumn, La Fontaine, a true whim of nature, never ceases to amaze.
The end of the nineteenth century saw the first attempt to dive into the submerged channel of the Sorgue, (in the form of vertical funnel 308 meters deep) and more than a century of daring explorations to better understand the mystery of its operation. In all seasons, secondary sources feed the Sorgue and form a beautiful lake shaded by secular plane trees.
