Frontier Military Historic Byway & Kansas Route 66 - End -

Route 66 barely scratches the extreme south-eastern Kansas, running for 13 miles through the heart of three small towns: Galena, Riverton, and Baxter Springs,
all trying their best to preserve & promote Route 66 attractions.

The Frontier Military route approximates old military trails the Army used to transport troops and supplies between border forts during the frontier days.

Two Historic Byways, meet at Baxter on the same road for a few miles & End at the border with Oklahoma, & before you know it Kansas has gone.

From the American Scenic Byways & Kansas Byways websites:
"The Historic Route 66 byway offers opportunities for visitors to enjoy a variety of experiences and “get their own kicks” while driving the original Kansas portion of Route 66, found in the “Ozark Plateau” or southeast corner of the state.

Museums, murals and ghost writing found along the way tell the local history of life along the route. A traveler can drive over many of the original structures of “The Mother Road,” including the only remaining Marsh Arch Bridge on Route 66, and even explore the mining and railroad history of the area.

From a historical perspective, the Frontier Military Historic Byway is a tangible delineation of significant “lines” drawn throughout Kansas' history. The byway denotes the eastern edge of the “permanent Indian frontier,” the dividing line of conflict between KS and MO (and pro and anti-slavery forces) during the Bleeding Kansas Civil War prelude, and the edge of civilization for explorers and pioneers moving west--all pieces of a rich history that can be experienced at various sites along the byway route."
