During the World War II American troops were stationed on Bonaire. In 1944, these soldiers were visited along with Princess Juliana of the Netherlands. A memorial plaque in honor of former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt commemorates this visit to the island during World War II. The bronze plaque is inscribed:
