Mendig was first documented in 1041 as menedich.
From Roman times to the 19th century, Mendig flourished thanks to the extraction and processing of basalt lava, mainly as a millstone and for minerals. Mendig basalt lava is until today a term for a solid, resistant stone. In the 19th century, the underground quarries were used as a fermentation and storage cellar for 28 Mendiger breweries.
On August 6, 1950 Niedermendig was the first municipality in the new Rhineland-Palatinate city rights. By decision of the city council of Niedermendig and the municipal council of Obermendig the city of Mendig was formed on June 7, 1969."
