The Pioneer Monument referenced in the WPA Guide to the Oregon Trail stands in a small park across the street from the Natrona County Courthouse in downtown Casper WY.

"[page 179] CASPER, 312.4 m. (5,103 alt., 16,619 pop.) (see WYOMING
GUIDE), the second largest city in Wyoming, was named for Fort
Casper.

. . .

[page 180] In the city is a PIONEER MONUMENT, erected in 1911. It is an obelisk 40 feet in height, of Indiana limestone."

The words carved into the obelisk read as follows:

"PIONEER MONUMENT

Erected on the site
of the
OLD OREGON TRAIL

In memory of the pioneers
Who blazed the way

Built by
NATRONA COUNTY PIONEER
ASSOCIATION

1849 1911"

A second historical plaque was subsequently added to the obelisk marking the site of Fort Casper, to the west:

"FORT CASPER

Established about 1864
By Volunteers

Abandoned Oct 19, 1867

Situated one mile west
Of this spot
