Rag Rock and Town Meadow - Massachusetts Historical Markers on Waymarking.com

This plaque sits on the Woburn town meadow near another plaque, similar in size and shape, describing the nearby Middlesex Canal.

The plaque reads:
"The craggy heights of Rag Rock loomed just beyond as the canal packet 'General Sullivan' passed through the Town Meadow at this point.
"The hill's name of 'Rag', Old English for 'rugged', was given it by the earliest settlers in the 1640s. Called 'Mianamo' by the Indians, it was for them a place of deep reverence and legend.
"The town of Woburn was the commercial center of the Middlesex Canal's social and commercial lives. At the three sets of double locks at Horn Pond, a thriving tavern, hotel and entertainment complex developed - one of the earliest resort centers in the country. The passage of the canal through the town gave birth to an expanding shoe and leather trade, changing the town from an agricultural to a commercial center."
