The central business district was established by the 1880's along Broad Street. That street follows the bank of Pinal Creek, subsidiary of the Salt River. Being isolated from most of Arizona transportation to and from Globe was directed east to New Mexico. Many of the earliest buildings are still standing, including the Courthouse, Jail, Rail Station, numerous hotels and churches. The census of 2010 listed 7500 people. Mining, transportation, government and commerce remain the major activities of the city.
