Seit es sie gibt, heißt sie im Volksmund die "Hohe Brücke" der Eisenbahnviadukt am Ende des Karmelenbergerweges und am Anfang des Bassenheimer Waldes. Wer die Schnuchwerke, die letzte von einstmals 22 Bassenheimer Bimsfabriken, durchwandert und die ersten Bäume hinter sich hat, sieht unversehens vor und über sich.
In 16,5 Metern Höhe überspannt die Talbrücke den Weg und ist damit das Tor zur urwüchsigen Baumallee und zur altehrwürdigen barocken Marienkapelle auf dem 373 Meter hohen Karmelenberg.
Errichtet worden ist die „Hohe Brücke" im Jahre 1902 als Viadukt mit drei Rundbogen, deren je eine lichte Weite von je 16 Metern hat. Die Planung hatte die damalige Königlich Preußische Eisenbahndirektion Köln besorgt.
Der Viadukt steht genau bei Kilometer 12,408 der Bahnlinie von Koblenz nach Mayen-Ost. Als Baumaterial wurde Basaltlava aus heimischen Steinbrüchen verwendet. Beim Bau haben zahlreiche italienische Arbeiter mitgeholfen, von denen Nachkommen noch heute in Bassenheim leben.
Die ursprünglich vorgesehene Eröffnung der Bahnlinie am 1. Oktober 1904 mußte wegen eines Bergrutsches bei Mayen und der Entgleisung eines Bauzuges bei Polch verschoben werden. Doch am 12 November 1904 konnte die Strecke zunächst bis Polch und vier Wochen später bis Mayen-Ost eröffnet werden.
Die Bahnlinie war von den Gemeinden gefordert worden, um das Maifeld und die Voreifel zu erschließen und den anerkannten Luftkurort Bassenheim an die für die Gäste wichtige Rheinstrecke der Reichsbahn anzubinden. Doch den Ausschlag für den Bau der Bahn von Koblenz nach Mayen mit Anbindung nach Westen gaben letztlich militärstrategische Überlegungen. Die Gemeinden entlang der Bahnlinie freuten sich trotzdem und Bassenheim wurde sogar zeitweilig eine Königlich Preußische Bahnmeisterei.

been built is the "High Bridge" in 1902 as a viaduct with three arched whose ever has an inside diameter of 16 meters each. The planning was the former Royal Prussian Railway Directorate Cologne worried.
The viaduct stands exactly at kilometer 12.408 of the railway line from Koblenz to Mayen-Ost. Basalt lava from local quarries was used as building material. Many Italian workers helped with the construction, of which descendants still live today in Bassenheim.
The originally planned opening of the railway line on 1 October 1904 had to be postponed because of a landslide at Mayen and the derailment of a construction train at Polch. But on 12 November 1904, the route was initially opened to Polch and four weeks later to Mayen-East.
The railway line had been demanded by the communities to develop the Maifeld and the Voreifel and to connect the renowned health resort Bassenheim the important for the guests Rheinstrecke the Reichsbahn. But the decisive factor for the construction of the railway from Koblenz to Mayen with connection to the west was ultimately military strategic considerations. The communities along the railway line were happy anyway and Bassenheim was even temporarily a Royal Prussian Bahnmeisterei.
