Oddly enough the Tallest Thing in Vermont, the Bennington Battle Monument, commemorates a Revolutionary War battle that took place near the town Walloomsac in New York State, ten miles away.
On August 17, 1777, New Hampshire born Brigadier General John Stark and 1,400 men from New Hampshire along with militia members from Vermont, under Colonel Seth Warner the commander of the Green Mountain Boys, and the 2nd Berkshire County Regiment from Massachusetts defeated an contingent British soldiers from Saratoga, NY, under the command of General John Burgoyne, who were attempting to capture a cache of weapons and food that were store where the monument now stands.
The monument was planned in 1877 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the battle. Construction of the The 306' tall dolomite obelisk began in 1887 and was completed in 1889. At 200' there is an observatory.
Access to the monument area is free. Admission to the interior of the Bennington Battle Monument is $5.00.
