Glacial Lake Agassiz formed about 16,000 years ago as the ice sheets began to retreat at the end of the last ice age. It was the largest of the glacial lakes, covering 350,000 square kilometers, and having depths up to 200 meters. This sign is located in Lake Minnewasta Recreation Area, which sits on the edge of the Pembina Hills, part of the Manitoba escarpment. The Pembina Hills formed a part of the western shore of Lake Agassiz. Large boulders found in the area are glacial erratics carried by the ice sheets from the shield country far to the north.
