Almost every Bad Godesberg citizen knows pigeons on the roof. But Yuri on the roof? There really is the Russian high-flyer who was the first person to be shot into space 50 years ago. A huge head of Gagarin peeps from the flat roof of a house in the Allee der Kosmonauten, pardon: in the Beethovenallee.
He's been there for 20 years. The wife of the head and homeowner remembers: "My husband had a lot to do with the Eastern Bloc countries professionally. And so it happened that he was invited to a reception in the former Soviet embassy in Schweinheim.
Walking through the park, he saw an entire gallery of heroes of the Republic, all of whom were to be discarded. When asked the ambassador (after some vodkas) if he couldn't have Yuri's head, His Excellency replied: "Take him with you. "
No sooner said than done. On the roof of a Fiat 500, the hollow head of Schweinheim drove into the villa district, where it was immediately placed on the roof of the house with the active support of a friend.
"I actually didn't notice anything for three weeks," says the proud owner's wife with a smile. "Then I was shocked and confronted my husband with the alternative: Yuri or me!" She has finally gotten used to the sight. "And we're still here after 20 years. Both," she says with a smile. And that will probably also remain so in the future.
