Situated in the Cairngorm National Park, Dalwhinnie Distillery at 1164 feet above sea level is the highest distillery in Scotland. It was opened in 1897 by John Grant, George Sellar and designer, Alexander Mackenzie, and built by architect Charles Chree Doig. Named the Strathspey Distillery, the site was chosen for access to clear spring water and abundant peat from the surrounding bogs.
The following year it went into liquidation and was bought by A.P. Blyth for his son, and renamed Dalwhinnie Distillery. The distillery has undergone many different owners since and is currently owned by Diageo.
The distillery is noted for its Highland Single Malt, a smooth, golden heather honey-like spirit. It has two main stills, one wash at 17,000 litres, and one spirit at 14,000 litres.
Several tours are available, the Dalwhinnie Distillery Tour is a guided tour for £12. A tasting only option for £6-£18. A Whisky & Chocolate costs £25 which is followed by up to 6 single malt whiskies & hand made chocolates. A single hot chocolate & whisky is £6.
