Text on the plaque:
A Gift to Canada
In 1991, the government of Germany presented this section of the Berlin Wall to Canada. A year earlier, officials from East and West Germany, the United-States, the Soviet Union, the United-Kingdom, and France had met in Ottawa, where they agreed to a framework for peaceful German reunification.
In West Berlin, artists protested against the Wall with graffiti. This section depicts the Brandenburg Gate, a crossing point between East and West. The other side is bare because East German border guards arrested or shot anyone approaching the Wall.
