De Ezelsbeek (in Wallonie "Grand roua" of "Rigolle d'Awans" genaamd) is een zijstroom van de Jeker die in Bierset ontspringt. Deze natuurlijke waterloop stroomt door Awans en mondt bij Villers-l'Evêque uit in Les Marnières, een voormalige mergelgroeve.
Les Marnières geniet vandaag erkenning als een gebied van bijzondere biologische waarde. De biodiversiteit is er zeer rijk, - een zeldzaamheid in het huidige Haspengouw. U vindt er onder andere dassen, patrijzen en orchideën.
De Ezelsbeek stroomt verder door Vlaanderen in Tongeren (Nerem) mondt ze uit in de Jeker.
Dit grensoverschrijdende aspect was de reden om de Ezelsbeek op te nemen in het Europese samenwerkingsproject Aquadra.
Binnen dit project ontwikkelen de waterbeheerders van Vlaanderen, Wallonie en Nederland samen nieuwe werkinstrumenten en stemmen het waterbeheer beter op elkaar af.
Om waterstanden op afstand te kunnen volgen installeerde men in het kader van AQUADRA automatische peilmeetpunten in Vlaanderen en Wallonië. Zo kunnen waterbeheerders en hulpdiensten via automatisch verstuurde sms-berichten tijdig geïnformeerd worden wanneer het waak- of alarmpeil van een waterloop of wachtbekken bereikt wordt. In Tongeren installeerde de provincie Limburg (B) op de Beek en Ezelsbeek en in de wachtbekkens van Rutten en Diets- Heur vier peilmeetpunten. Meer stroomopwaarts werden in Xhendremael (Wallonië) twee extra meetpunten geplaatst om tijdig geïnformeerd te worden over de vulling van de wachtbekkens van Rutten en Diets-Heur (Tongeren). Deze peilmeetpunten werden in 2013 geïnstalleerd

Affluent du Geer , Le Grand Roua (ou Rigolle d'Awans) prend sa source à Bierset. Ce cours d'eau naturel traverse alors Awans avant d'arriver à Villers-l'Evèque ou il s'écoule dans les Marnières, ancienne exploitation de marne qui nous entourent.
Reconnues aujourd'hui comme site de grand intérêt biologique. Les Marnières recèlent une biodiversité devenue trop rare en Hesbaye. On y trouve aisi blaireau, perdix mais aussi orchidées..
Le Grand Roua continue ensuite son cours en Flandre ou il porte le nom d'Ezelsbeek. Il conflue avec le Geer à Tongres.
Cet aspect transfrontalier a valu au Grand Roua d'être intégré au projet européen Aquadra qui a pour but d'améliorer la collaboration transfrontalière entre les gestionaires de l'eau en Wallonie, en Flandre et aux Pays-Bas.
