[EN] "The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and St. Cassian is the largest sacral building in the South Tyrolean town of Bressanone and the bishop's church of the Roman Catholic diocese of Bolzano-Brixen. The cathedral is called Cathedral and Basilica minor. Together with the surrounding buildings, including the Cathedral Cloister, the Chapel of St. John and the Church of Our Lady, it forms part of the Bressanone Cathedral district.
The bishop's residence was moved from Säben to Bressanone soon after the town was founded, from where he ruled the formerly influential Principality of Bressanone. In 1964 the bishop's seat was moved to Bolzano, where the parish church of the Assumption of Mary has served as a cathedral ever since. Nevertheless, the bishop's cathedra and the cathedral chapter are still located in Bressanone/Brixen, making the cathedral the highest church in the diocese. The first three bishops of Bolzano-Brixen (Joseph Gargitter, Wilhelm Egger and Karl Golser) are also buried here."
