The river basin of the Jeker (in French: Geer) covers some 474 km² and extends over three regions and two countries. Of this
basin is 375 km² in Wallonia, 90 km² in Flanders and 9 km² in the Netherlands. The Jeker is about 65 km long, rises in Lens-Saint-
Remy (Hannut), flows through Waremme, crosses the regional border for the first time and crosses Tongeren and then
to continue in Wallonia and cross Bitsingen (in French: Bassenge). In Kanne the Jeker passes for the third
times the regional border, to cross the Belgian-Dutch border after 1.6 km and a siphonage under the Albert Canal. After
This eventful course leads to the Jeker near Maastricht in the Meuse. The Jeker and almost half of its tributaries exceed
borders. Several Jeker routes run through Natura2000 areas.
The Jeker basin lies entirely in Droog-Haspengouw. The upstream area of ??Tongeren is called
usually "Haut-Geer"; downstream one speaks of "Bas-Geer". The main tributaries from top to bottom are:
• The brook Omal, which has numerous springs and houses numerous water beds.
• De Mulle and the Lange Beek, which are located at the Flemish border.
• The Yerne, which is the breeding ground for the trees that characterize Haspengouw.
• The Roua de Theys, which has been badly damaged and even almost completely disappeared due to the intense agricultural activities.
• The Ezelsbeek (Grand-Roua), the Beek (Exhaure d'Ans) and the Zouw (Berwinne), which crosses the region
RIVER GAUGE INFORMATION:
To be able to follow water levels remotely, they were installed in the context of AQUADRA automatic water metering points in Flanders and Wallonia. This allows water managers and emergency services automatically informed when it is sent via automatically sent SMS messages the alarm or alarm level of a watercourse or waiting basin is reached. In Tongeren the province of Limburg (B) installed on the Beek and Ezelsbeek and in the waiting basins of Rutten and Diets- Heur four level measurement points. More upstream, two extra measuring points were placed in Xhendremael (Wallonia) to be informed in good time about the filling of the Rutten and Diets-Heur quenches (Tongeren). This one measuring points were installed in 2013
