The Scottish town of Callander lies at one of the gateways to the Scottish Highlands and is a popular destination for tourists. A mile north of the town on the wooded hillside, lies the Bracklinn Falls, from the Gaelic word Breac, meaning speckled, and Linn, meaning pool.
The falls were in the making millions of years ago when this area was south of the equator and a fine sandstone was formed. A geological fault exposed the soft rock below and over the centuries, water cascading down the hillside has gradually carved a gorge.
A narrow motorable road runs up the hillside from the town centre and ends at a car parking area where it is a half mile walk eastwards along a good path to a well constructed wooden bridge over the gorge which replaced the original iron predecessor which was washed away in 2004. The bridge offers a view of the falls, as does a narrow path on the opposite (east) side of the falls.
The falls are at their finest mainly in winter after heavy rainfall or melting snow.
