Rake Family Plot in Charles Evans Cemetery - Reading, PA - Sphinx Sculptures on Waymarking.com

Charles Evans Cemetery is one of the older cemeteries in Berks County and also one of the most beautiful. It is a large cemetery with rolling hills and it is dotted with many unusual and/or beautiful memorials of those who have died before us. But, to me, one of the most unusual is the sphinx monument which marks the family plot for the Rake family. The plot is not too far inside the entrance to the cemetery which may mean that it was one of the first lots sold after the cemetery opened. It would be nice to know more but, unfortunately, I have not been able to find much information on the Rake family except for a listing that Sergeant Benjamin Rakes served in the Civil War in the Seventh PA Cavalry Veteran Volunteers. He mustered out after his second tour of duty in Macon GA in 1865.

I did find the obituary of another Rake family member buried here, James Lewis Rake, who died in 1920, was vice president of the General Asphalt Company which is located in Philadelphia.

Even the usually reliable Find a Grave which ofter contains tidbits linked to the graves that it pictures has absolutely nothing about the Rake family except the names, dates of birth and dates of death for those buried there.

It boggles the mind trying to guess just why this particular monument was chosen for this family but at least it makes it easy to find their family plot.
