At the narrowest part of the Netherlands, right between the Meuse and Rhine, at the 51th latitude the most westerly point of Germany can be found. This point is located in the Selfkant region, which is characterized by idyllic stream valleys and picturesque shoreline and swamp forests with numerous cycling and hiking trails. Selfkant belongs together with List on Sylt in the north, Oberstdorf in the south and Görlitz in the east to the so-called "Zipfelgemeinden", a union of four municipalities located in the four outer corners of Germany. The area has alternated between German and then Dutch territory until 1963, after which it remained German territory. An attractive residence and recreation place has been created around the special boundary stone. Information boards with interesting facts about the region provide an active excursion. And here is also the Smalste Stukje of the Netherlands. Our country is so narrow here, that Belgium and Germany almost touch each other and are only 4.8 km apart! All in all worth a look.
