Les 210 cellules photovoltaïques qui se trouvent sur la surface du bateau pouvaient capter l’énergie du soleil et la transformer en électricité. Le bolide n’utilisait aucun combustible fossile et ne rejette aucune émission polluante.
En 2005, le club étudiant du bateau à énergie solaire, Photon, a remporté le prix AVENIR dans la catégorie Environnement, lors de la sixième édition du Gala Forces AVENIR. Le travail du club Photon a permis à une vingtaine d’étudiants de mettre en application la théorie vue en classe et d’apporter aussi une contribution concrète à l’avancement de la recherche sur les embarcations non polluantes et l’utilisation de l’énergie solaire.
La même année, les membres de l’équipe de Photon sont revenus de Buffalo, où se tenait la compétition annuelle de bateaux solaires Solar Splash, avec trois prix en poche : meilleur rapport technique, meilleure conception de coque et, pour une troisième année consécutive, pour leur professionnalisme exceptionnel.
Le club étudiant Photon n'existe plus et leur prototype Photon II est désormais exposé dans le hall de l'ETS.

The 210 photo-voltaic cells on the surface of the boat could capture the sun's energy and turn it into electricity. The car used no fossil fuel and did not emit any polluting emissions.
In 2005, the student club of the solar energy boat, Photon, won the AVENIR award in the Environment category at the sixth edition of the Gala Forces AVENIR. The work of the Photon Club has enabled some twenty students to apply the theory seen in class and to make a concrete contribution to the advancement of research on non-polluting craft and the use of solar energy.
That same year, Photon team members returned from Buffalo, where the annual Solar Splash solar boat competition was held, with three awards in hand: best technical report, best hull design and, for a third year in a row, for their exceptional professionalism.
The Photon student club no longer exists and their Photon II prototype is now on display in the ETS hall.
