Situated in Southwest Florida on the barrier island of Sanibel is the J. N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge more commonly known as simply Ding Darling. This refuge was originally created in December of 1945 by then president Harry S. Truman, and was known as the Sanibel National Wildlife Refuge. In 1967 it was re-named after J.N. "Ding" Darling who was a local winter visitor to nearby Captiva Island.

Ding was a syndicated editorial cartoonist for newspapers and received two Pulitzer Prizes for Editorial Cartooning one in 1924 and the other in 1943. He was also an important figure in the conservation movement and President Franklin Roosevelt appointed him to a blue ribbon Committee on Wildlife Restoration in 1934. He initiated the Federal Duck Stamp Program and designed the first duck stamp.

This book shows an illistrated history of the Ding Darling Refuge from its early beginnings to present times. Photographs and captions show the development of the sanctuary by a wildlife employee who worked here most of his adult life.
