"In 1888 Father Johannes Matthias Kribs (1822-1901), who operated the parish of St. Peter from 1869 and 1896, set up a chapel on the Sint-Pietersberg, on the junction of two old roads: the road from Lichtenberg to Kanne. and the current Luikerweg.Op the place of this chapel had previously been a chapel, which at one point was replaced by a cross.
The chapel was dedicated to Saint Roch, the patron saint against contagious diseases. In the nineteenth century, Europe was plagued by cholera and its cause was unknown. A cholera epidemic in 1865-1866 did many victims in the parish.
By marl mining in the ENCI quarry, the chapel was moved in 1972 to the Hoeve Lichtenberg.
In 1992 and in 2006, the St. Roch Chapel was restored by the Oud Sint-Pieter Foundation in collaboration with the Natuurmonumenten Association. During the restoration of 1992 a new statue of Saint Roch was placed, donated by the Veldekekring Maastricht. An image of St. Donatus was also placed above the entrance.
Construction:
The Saint Roch chapel has a hexagonal floor plan and is built in brick. The chapel has a cement stone dome with an elevation at the front with a niche in which a statue of the Holy Donatus is placed.
Below the niche is a stone with the inscription: H. Rochus BVO / J.M. Kribs fits / St Pieter 16 Aug 1888 (Saint Roch, Pray for Us / J.M. Kribs, pastor / Saint Peter, August 16, 1888). On the elevation above the entrance is a crucifix with a Jesus figure.
In the chapel there is a small altar with a statue of Saint Roch. The floor is tiled."
