The Autise takes its source near Mazières-en-Gâtine (79) at 186 m altitude.
Downstream from Nieul on the Autise (85), it is divided into two branches:
the young Autise, artificial, crosses the Porte de l'Ile. From Souil, it is channeled and is called the channel of the young Autise, which bypasses Maillezais. The latter flows into the Sèvre Niortaise near the old port of Maillé.
the Old Autise, natural course, first preserved and then largely channeled from Courdault (municipality of Bouillé-Courdault) is named channel of the old Autise. This one goes to Saint Sigismond then flows into Sèvre Niortaise at a place called L'Ouillette in La Barbée.

En aval de Nieul sur l'Autise (85), elle se divise en deux branches :
la Jeune Autise, artificielle, traverse La Porte de l'Ile. À partir de Souil, elle est canalisée et se nomme le canal de la jeune Autise, qui contourne Maillezais. Ce dernier se jette dans la Sèvre Niortaise près du vieux port de Maillé.
la Vieille Autise, cours naturel, d'abord préservée puis largement canalisée à partir de Courdault (commune de Bouillé-Courdault) est nommée canal de la vieille Autise. Celui-ci passe à Saint Sigismond puis se jette dans la Sèvre Niortaise au lieu-dit L'Ouillette à La Barbée.
