"L'église Saint-Hilaire-le-Grand à Poitiers est un impressionnant monument d'art roman inscrit au Patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco. Comme la grande église romane Saint-Nicolas à Blois, l'édifice dégage une atmosphère de paix et de sérénité.
A l'origine, en 1049, l'église n'avait pas de bas-côté et le clocher était séparé. Au XIIe siècle, comme garantie contre les incendies, les architectes de l'époque décidèrent de changer la voûte en charpente de bois par une voûte en pierre. D'où la nécessité de bâtir les grands piliers séparant la nef des bas-côtés pour soutenir le poids de l'ensemble.
Au Moyen Age, Saint-Hilaire-le-Grand était une halte privilégiée sur le chemin de Compostelle. Pendant les guerres de Religion, l'église souffrit beaucoup : en 1590, le clocher, fragilisé par les bombardements, s'effondra, entraînant dans sa chute une partie de la voûte.
Enfin, au XIXe siècle, la nef et les bas-côtés, à l'exception de la dernière travée, ont été entièrement reconstruits.
Architecture. Toute la nef (à l'exception de la dernière travée - celle qui jouxte le chœur) a été refaite au XIXe siècle. Le reste (dont le chœur et le déambulatoire) remonte à l'époque romane.
Les piliers massifs du centre de la nef ont été construits - une première fois - au XIIe siècle lorsqu'on décida de remplacer la voûte en charpente par une voûte en pierre.
On remarquera la rangée - très originale - de raccords horizontaux reliant les piliers multilobés de la nef aux murs d'origine.
Un fait original : Saint-Hilaire-le-Grand n'a pas de chapelle axiale. Le vitrail dans le chœur, au centre de la photo, se trouve dans le mur qui rejoint les deux chapelles absidiales les plus proches de l'axe de la nef."
"The Saint-Hilaire-le-Grand church in Poitiers is an impressive monument of Romanesque art inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.As the large Romanesque church Saint-Nicolas in Blois, the building exudes an atmosphere of peace and of serenity.
Originally, in 1049, the church had no aisle and the bell tower was separated. In the twelfth century, as a guarantee against fire, the architects of the time decided to change the vault wood frame by a stone vault. Hence the need to build the large pillars separating the nave from the aisles to support the weight of the whole.
In the Middle Ages, Saint-Hilaire-le-Grand was a favorite stop on the road to Compostela. During the Wars of Religion, the church suffered a lot: in 1590, the belfry, weakened by the bombing, collapsed, causing in its fall part of the vault.
Finally, in the nineteenth century, the nave and aisles, with the exception of the last bay, were completely rebuilt.
Architecture. The whole nave (with the exception of the last bay - the one that adjoins the choir) was rebuilt in the 19th century. The rest (including the choir and the ambulatory) dates back to the Romanesque period.

Note the row - very original - of horizontal connections connecting the multilobed pillars of the nave to the original walls.
An original fact: Saint-Hilaire-le-Grand does not have an axial chapel. The window in the choir, in the center of the photo, is in the wall that joins the two apse chapels closest to the axis of the nave. "
