Weston Park, which opened in 1875, was the first municipal park in Sheffield and was developed from the grounds of Weston Hall, which the Sheffield Corporation purchased for £15,750 following the death of its owners, Eliza and Anne Harrison. The hall itself was converted into the Sheffield City Museum.

The weather station equipment is fenced off with iron railings and has an information board next to it.
Whatever the weather

Weston Park weather station is one of the oldest weather stations in the country. Weather information has been collected here every day since 1882.

The station is managed by staff at Weston Park Museum who use the weather data to answer thousands of enquiries each year about the weather in Sheffield. The information is also sent to the Met Office.

The weather station was set up by Elijah Howarth one of the first curators at museum. He was known locally as 'Elijah the prophet' because of his reputation for forecasting the weather.

Howarth prepared daily forecasts to warn miners of changes in air pressure that could trigger the release of dangerous gases. He recorded daily weather observations here for 47 years.

' Mr. Howarth was never happier than when the weather happened to be doing something especially eccentric; he would discourse on the phenomenon as enthusiastically as if the British climate were his own domestic pet, whose tricks and freakishness he loved to watch'.
